Your skin is affected by what you put on it and also by what you put into your body. Here are common mistakes people do to their skin without knowing.

  1. Using a hairspray is good to make your hair stay in place and appear beautiful but the chemicals in it are terrible for your skin. It could cause irritation or allergic reaction. Cover your facial skin while you use it and prevent it from dripping to your face when you sweat.
  2. Sleeping with your make-up on doesn’t just make your bed and pillow stained, it also clogs the pores on your skin and traps bacteria in it. this can lead to acne. Leave a makeup wipe by your bedside if you are forgetful.
  3. Casually popping a zit/pimple might feel like a way to get rid of it but it actually gets more bacteria into skin pores and that leads to more zits. Applying ice is an easy way to reduce the swelling and redness of the zit/pimple.
  4. Excessive sodium intake. Sodium absorbs moisture and too much of it can lead to dry, flaky skin. Avoid salty food.
  5. Get at least 8 hours of sleep daily. While you sleep, your skin refreshes itself, clears out pores and replaces the upper layer with fresh skin-cells. If you don’t get enough sleep, your skin can get dull and clogged pores can become zits/pimples.
  6. Large quantities of sugar damage the collagen in your skin. Collagen is what gives your skin its elasticity, and when it’s damaged, your skin will end up sagging. Try substituting candy and chocolate with fruits and vegetables.
  7. Alcohol will dehydrate your skin if consumed excessively. Dry skin will get wrinkles faster and will look dull and flaky.



  1. Use natural vegetable based soap or shower gel, as these are less irritating to the skin.
  2. Use natural oils to moisturize your skin. Almond oil is light and quickly absorbed. Coconut oil is a wonderful moisturizer with a delicious smell. Where possible, buy pure organic oils with no additives.
  3. Eat foods that support your skin. Foods high in anti-oxidants protect the skin cells from aging and from free radicals found in food and the environment. Food rich in Vitamin E (almond nuts), which helps your skin lock in moisture and fight skin-aging free radicals. Berries are very high in Vitamin C, which also helps keep your skin healthy.
  4. Avoid processed foods. They damage your health AND your skin. Carry healthy snacks with you like fruit or nuts, so you have an alternative to fast food or sugary treats.
  5. Quit smoking and avoid second hand smoke. We all know that smoking is bad for your skin (among other things), and secondhand smoking is just as bad. The chemicals in tobacco cause the skin to sag and increase the formation of wrinkles.

SECRET TIP: Stay hydrated. Drink lots of water (At least 1.5 to 2 liters a day). You can add a squeeze of lime or lemon if you hate the tastelessness of water.
