Weight Management

This focuses on assessing, treating, and monitoring overweight or obesity as a chronic condition, along with related health risks. Key elements typically include:

  • Measuring BMI, waist circumference (to assess central adiposity), and sometimes body composition.
  • Taking a detailed weight history, medication review (including drugs that promote weight gain), lifestyle factors (diet, activity, sleep, stress), and screening for secondary causes (e.g., thyroid issues).
  • Evaluating comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes/prediabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, sleep apnea, fatty liver disease, joint problems, and mental health concerns.
  • Developing a personalized plan: lifestyle counseling (nutrition, physical activity, behavior change—often using frameworks like the 5As), pharmacotherapy when appropriate (e.g., certain GLP-1 receptor agonists or other anti-obesity medications for eligible patients), and referrals for intensive programs or bariatric surgery if indicated.
  • Ongoing monitoring and support, sometimes via dedicated “weight-prioritized” visits.
